About the University of the Third Age (U3A)

Mission and Values

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a form of lifelong learning. It enables older people obtaining university-level education encouraging personal development. U3A supports active lifestyle of senior citizens, mediates the latest findings, knowledge and skills in a suitable form, fosters mental and physical vigour and independence of people in the post-productive age, stimulates their interest in current events, practical use of gained knowledge and active life attitudes. 
The University of the Third Age at Masaryk University was founded in 1990 and has become an integral part of educational, social and cultural activities of the university.

Admission conditions

U3A programmes are intended for people who have reached the retirement age and completed secondary education with a school-leaving examination. U3A participants do not have the status of students according to Act No. 111/1998 Coll., on Higher Education Institutions and on Modification and Amendment of Other Acts.

Course of studies

Instruction in long-term courses is in the form of lectures, practical training, seminars or field trips. The courses are taught by professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers, as well as experts from practice. U3A students are also offered short-term courses, special lectures, open-air art workshops etc.

Completion of study at U3A

The U3A participants who meet the pre-set requirements will become graduates from the programme, and they will be awarded a certificate of completion at a graduation ceremony attended by representatives of all faculties and Masaryk University management.

Follow-up studies

Those U3A graduates who wish to continue in studies may enrol in a course for graduates. The courses are offered in four areas: social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences and the humanities. Graduates may choose whether to attend courses in one area or gain knowledge in more disciplines. They may sign in other long-term courses according to the current offer.
